What is a cellular Network?

A cellular network is a radio network which allows a number of handheld mobile stations (More commonly known as mobile phone or cell phone) to communicate with each other through voice and text message.

The Technology

Cellular Network has the following properties:

This network is made up of a number of cells, each served by at least one fixed-location transceiver known as a base station and handsets communicate through them.
When joined together, these cells provide radio coverage over a wide geographic area.
A large number of portable transceivers such as mobile phones, pagers can communicate with each other and with fixed transceivers and telephones anywhere in the network.
The mobile handsets prices vary from $30 to $800. The price depends on the advanced features of the set.
This network provides access to the internet through GPRS/EDGE services. User can access the internet directly through the GPRS/EDGE/3G enabled mobile phone or connect the phone to a laptop or desktop PC through Bluetooth or wire connection.

Cellular network uses two types of technologies, Global Systems for Mobile Communication (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).But the GSM technology is more popular in the Asia Pacific region.
Cellular networks offer a number of advantages:

increased capacity
reduced power usage
larger coverage area
reduced interference from other signals

An example of a simple non-telephone cellular system is an old taxi drivers radio system where the taxi company has several transmitters based around a city that can communicate directly with each taxi.

When no other means of connecting to the Internet is available, mobile workers can use their Bluetooth enabled cell phone as a modem. If your laptop is not already Bluetooth enabled, you can purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter or connect the phone through a cable.

Here's is how to pair a Bluetooth phone to a laptop:

Turn on the Bluetooth enabled cell phone and turn on the Bluetooth connection software.
Make the phone discoverable.
In Windows XP, go to My Bluetooth Places.
Select View Devices in Range.
After the discovery process is complete, you should see the icon for the cell phone.
Right-click on the icon and select Discover Available Services.
To connect to your cell phone right-click on the Dial-Up Networking.
Select Connect Dial-up networking.
The phone will ask if you want to accept the connection request, decline or add to paired.
The last step pairs the phone and laptop and performs the connection request.
You will be prompted to enter a PIN code to pair up the devices; the PIN is entered in the cell phone.
A dialogue box appears asking for user name, password and the phone number of your ISP.
Click on the dial button to complete the connection.

Tips:

To find the devices in range you can click the Bluetooth menu and select "search for devices" or open Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood and press F5.
Pairing a phone and laptop will ensure the connection can be established whenever you require it and you don’t have to go through the set-up process each time. If you do not pair the two devices, you will have to make the phone discoverable each time.
